DESCRIPTION:WHAT:\nPress conference and ceremony to honor the life of Pedro Arriago-Santoya and others who have died in immigrant detention \n\n\n\nWHEN:\nFriday\, February 14\nPress Conference 12:00 – 12:30 pm EDT\nGraveside Service 1:30 – 2:00 pm EDT \n\n\n\nWHERE:\nIn front of the Atlanta ICE Field Offices \n180 Ted Turner SW\, Atlanta\, GA 30303 \n\n\n\nAtlanta\, GA — On January 24\, 2019\, \nPedro Arriago-Santoya became the 5th person to die in Immigration and \nCustoms Enforcement (ICE) custody in the state of Georgia in the last 3 \nyears. Mr. Arriago-Santoya was incarcerated at Stewart Detention Center \nin Lumpkin\, GA where a history of medical neglect and use of solitary \nconfinement have contributed to immeasurable suffering and several \ndeaths. Other people who have died in ICE custody in Georgia include: \n\n\n\nRoberto Medina Martinez\, March 2009\nJeancarlo Jiménez-Joseph\, May 2017\nAtul Kumar Babubhai Patel\, May 2017\nYulio Castro-Garrido\, January 2018\nEfrain Romero De La Rosa\, July 2018 \n\n\n\nReports suggest Pedro Arriago-Santoya \nwas 44 years old at the time of his death\, was born in Mexico\, and went \nby several other names including Fabian Valdovinos-Salgado\, Antonio \nValdez-Baldera\, Fortino Mendiola\, Pedro Santivilla-Arroba\, Pedro \nSantoya\, and Pedro Carillo-Santos. \n\n\n\nSeveral months after his passing\, \nadvocates with Project South and Georgia Detention Watch discovered \nthat\, unable to locate Mr. Arriago-Santoya’s next of kin\, ICE had buried\n his remains in an unmarked grave outside the City of Atlanta without \nany public announcement or service. On Friday\, February 14\, 2020\, \nimmigrant rights groups will hold a press conference at the Atlanta ICE \nField Offices to call for the end of immigrant detention and the \nabolition of ICE. The press conference will be followed by a graveside \nservice to honor the life of Mr. Arraigo-Santoya and others who have \nsuffered in ICE custody.
